Mechanical crinkle patterns, by contrast, often run counter to the hide's grain in ways that are subtly but unmistakably wrong.
For the consumer willing to look closely, these distinctions are accessible. A jeweler's loupe, a raking light source, and a few minutes of careful observation can separate genuine handcraft from its industrial imitation with considerable reliability.
Learning the Language
Developing fluency in reading handcraft marks is not a specialized skill reserved for curators and collectors. It is a practical competence available to any consumer who approaches objects with curiosity rather than passivity.
